An example timetable of events to follow.
The information submitted will be sufficient to enable us to make the
Import Licence application upon your behalf.
The UK issuing authority DEFRA will then issue the Import Licence to us
and the Boarding Document will be mailed or faxed to you or your nominated
agent.
Upon receipt of the Boarding Document you can then make the travel arrangements.
By air, the animals must travel as manifested cargo. By sea from the USA/Canada
on the QE2 they have special kennels and cattery on board the liner and
we arrange collection from Portsmouth. Crossing the Channel, they must
cross by either P & O Stena or Sea France into Dover. They are not
allowed to cross using the Eurotunnel or Hoverspeed.
All transportation carriers will need to know that you are in possession
of the Boarding Document before they will accept a booking from you.
Upon making a reservation with the carrier, you then need to advise us
of the full travel details, which you can do by going to the PERSONAL
file and completing the relevant section and submitting.
As time gets closer to departure, it is particularly helpful to us at
The Animal Inn to have as full information as you care to advise regarding
diet, temperament, words of command/communication, relevant veterinary
history, dates of last vaccinations etc, so please complete the relevant
section in your PERSONAL file.
If your pet is arriving from outside the EU, you will also need to complete
a Customs and Excise form C5. This document is necessary to avoid payment
of VAT on your pet and it's carriage to the UK. Your PERSONAL File will
help you through the steps necessary to its completion.
On the day of departure, be sure to follow the vet's advice regarding
feeding. Pets can be fastidious and if fed too close to their departure
time, may soil their container. It is better they should arrive a little
hungry and clean, as well as us then being the good guys who feed them!
Sedation is not advised as if there were any illness or upset, the sedation
may mask the symptoms and therefore delay treatment. Only in the extreme
case should you sedate your pet prior to travel. If you do sedate, only
do so on veterinary advice. Sometimes it may be wise to ask for two doses,
so enabling you to sedate your pet at home - 10 days in advance of travel,
under observation, in order to note the speed at which the sedation takes
effect and the time for which it has an effect. You will then have a more
accurate guideline as to when to administer it. Finally, if you do sedate
your pet, it is critical that you advise us in advance that you are doing
so and advise which particular sedative has been used and at what dosage.
On the day of their arrival in the UK, we shall collect your pet from
either the airline cargo department or ship.
It is worth noting that the UK airline clearance is the only extra we
cannot guarantee a price upon. It depends upon the airline and whether
it has a "warm room" as has British Airways and some other airlines
at Heathrow. Those airlines that do not have this facility have their
animal taken into the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre, which adds substantially
to the clearance costs.
We would normally anticipate that it takes about two hours minimum to
get the release of the pets at the airport and then it is a swift journey
to The Animal Inn in a well ventilated and heated carrying vehicle.
